All dogs are special. That goes without saying. However, some dogs have grabbed the attention of humans and become famous. Greyfriars Bobby is one such dog. Bobby, a Skye Terrier, was a loyal companion of John Gray and even stayed with him when the old man died in 1858 and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard in Edinburgh, Scotland. Even though dogs were not allowed in the churchyard, Bobby was never far from John Gray’s grave and could often be found lying on it. Like most dogs, Bobby had a positive influence on those fortunate to know or meet him.
Bobby stayed at John Gray’s grave until his own death in 1872 at the age of 16. A statue of Greyfriars Bobby was built and erected to commemorate the little dog. A gravestone for Bobby is in the churchyard.
