A
Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition
Written by Lee Mendelson
with reminiscences by Bill Melendez
ISBN: 0060198516
Like many people who grew up in the sixties and seventies, a nice Christmas tradition for me involved (and still does) watching some Christmas specials on television. One of my favourites is Charles M. Schultz’s A Charlie Brown Christmas which made its debut on December 9, 1965. This year will be the 35th consecutive broadcast on CBS-TV!
To commemorate and celebrate this wonderful television show A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition was created. This impressive book will delight Peanuts’ fans as it contains memories and thoughts of the show and Schultz from producer, Lee Mendelson and animator, Bill Melendez. Medelson and Melendez were friends of Charles M. Schultz and worked with the brilliant cartoonist until his death on February 12, 2000. They provide informative anecdotes about Schultz including a particularly insightful one by Mendelson. When asked if there were any similarities between Charles Schultz and his Peanuts characters, Lee Mendelson stated "He said to me once, ‘Charlie Brown is the way I am and Snoopy is the way I wish I could be.’"
Memories of Vince Guaraldi, the jazz pianist/composer who did the music for A Charlie Brown Christmas, are also included.
These special insights into the show, Schultz and Guaraldi make for an entertaining read, but there is much more to this wonderful book. The entire script of A Charlie Brown Christmas, including full-colour stills from the film, make up a significant part of the book. Background sketches, story boards and production sheets which have never been published are also included. Even the piano/vocal musical scores for Guaraldi’s Christmas Time Is Here and Linus and Lucy are included.
A Charlie Brown Christmas:
The Making of a Tradition is a special book about a special man and
a special show.

The
Christmas Candle
By Richard Paul Evans, Paintings by Jacob Collins ISBN: 0689823193 (Ages 5 and up) Christmas is a time when the concept of helping and giving to others (which should be practised all year) is emphasized. This doesn’t just mean exchanging gifts with family and friends, but thinking of those less fortunate and helping them in some way. This may mean donating to the local food bank, buying gifts for people who won’t receive much at Christmas or helping an animal in need. The Christmas Candle is a special book that combines a wonderful story with a vital message. Richard Paul Evans’ beautiful words are enhanced by Jacob Collins exquisite paintings. Evans’ story tells of a special candle that a young man buys on his way home for a family celebration. The candle illuminates things which normally wouldn’t be of importance to the young man, but which make him see things in a different light. These experiences make the young man a much better person and the world a kinder, safer place. The Christmas Candle is a Christmas classic! Note: Richard Paul Evans is the founder and executive director of The Christmas Box Foundation and The Christmas Box House International, Inc.™ “...a nonprofit organization devoted to the building of shelter-assessment facilities for abused children.” All of Mr. Evans’ proceeds from the sale of this book have been donated to The Christmas Box House. Grandfather’s
Christmas Tree
Written by Keith Strand
Illustrated by Thomas Locker
ISBN: 0152018212
Grandfather’s Christmas Tree is a story told to a young boy by his grandfather whose parents traveled to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in 1886 where they made their home. Although they had prepared for their first winter, blizzards hit the area for much of November and December piling snow so deep that additional wood could not be brought from the hills when their wood supply dwindled.
In order to survive, the young couple were forced to chop down and burn the beautiful blue spruce trees that sheltered their home. While chopping down some of the spruce trees they discovered two geese under the boughs of the tallest tree. One goose had a broken wing and the other had stayed with its mate.
The young couple fed the
two birds, but their wood supply was running out. They needed the wood
from the last blue spruce tree in order to survive. The geese also needed
the tree to survive as it provided them with shelter. Find out what happens
in this beautiful tale that evokes the true meaning of Christmas!

VCI Entertainment #8201 VCI Entertainment www.vcientertainment.com ISBN: 1557398038 1951, 86 minutes This version released in October 2004. Contains Black & White and Colour versions. The 1951 version of “A Christmas Carol” starring Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge, and adapted from the Charles Dickens’ book of the same title, is one of our family’s favourite Christmas movies. This heart-warming story of how Scrooge changes his mean-spirited ways after being visited by the ghosts of Jacob Marley, Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come is an entertaining movie with an important message. While my wife Lynn and I prefer the original black and white versions of older movies, our children prefer watching shows in colour. This isn’t a problem with the DVD “A Christmas Carol” just released by VCI Entertainment. This DVD features the classic film in both black and white and colour. I have to admit that the colourization of this film was very well done. Besides the two versions of the movie, this DVD also features an introduction by Patrick Macnee, cast biographies, an optional narrative for the blind and a cartoon – “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.” This 1951 version of “A Christmas Carol” is a Christmas classic which continues to entertain families. |
