Three Cats, Two Dogs: One Journey Through Multiple Pet Loss
David Congalton
ISBN: 0939165376

People fortunate to share their lives with animal companions will, in all likelihood, have to experience the tremendous loss associated with losing these cherished family members. While little attention has been given to the topic of pet loss, this is beginning to change with the publishing of numerous books on this topic in recent years. A good book recently published on this subject is David Congalton’s Three Cats, Two Dogs: One Journey Through Multiple Pet Loss.

Three Cats, Two Dogs tells of the roller coaster ride that David Congalton and his wife Charlotte have gone through since the night of December 14, 1997. On this night they lost their five beloved animal companions to what terrifies many people who share their homes with animals – fire. While out for the evening David and Charlotte’s house caught fire and all five of their pets died. Their three cats, Triptych, Tripper and Trio, and two dogs, Topper and Tess, had died from “carbon monoxide intoxication.”

Congalton writes openly and passionately of this tragedy. By reading about how he and his wife dealt with their incredible loss and how they were eventually able to move forward, you learn much about the important topic of pet loss. And David and Charlotte have moved forward.  They  continue to open their hearts and home to animals in need. When Three Cats, Two Dogs was published in 2000, 10 feline friends and four canine companions were sharing their lives with David and Charlotte!

An added bonus to this informative book are some of David Congalton’s newspaper columns about his animal companions. These columns, which appear at the end of each chapter, were originally published in the San Luis Obispo County Telegram-Tribune.

Winner of the “Merial Human-Animal Bond Award for Best Writing” in 2000, this book will help those who have loved and lost a pet deal with their animal friend’s death.
